Interdependence: The Role of an Architect in developing countries & Sustainable Development

The Role of an Architect

Architects apply impartial and creative thinking to projects large and small. They add value, whether from maximising light and space, adding functionality, or achieving the best return on investment.

For me, the role of an architect is to improve one's standard of living, using the space most efficiently and serves the purpose of construction. Though some may disagree, I think this role stays the same in both developed and developing countries.

Basic construction ideas can be manipulated to fit the purpose of a architecturally complex shopping centre, as well as primitive huts.

Sustainable development

Sustainable architecture seeks to construct or renovate buildings using innovative design, renewable materials and energy-efficient technology and in doing so reduce our dependence on traditional energy sources. Sustainable design therefore minimises both the initial environmental cost of building (through reducing material waste and using sustainable products) and the long-term environmental impact of the building.

In developing countries, it is quite simple to stray from using material that is cheaply available for construction, such as diluted cement. However, it is quite simple to use raw materials as these are readily available in many rural areas. If these are used most efficiently, such as bamboo for construction and banana leaves as the interior roofing, rural residents of places such as Uganda, can become sustainable users of the environment.
